Two 2026 updates push compressed air from 'it works' to 'prove it'. Energy-efficiency assessment and Class 0 verification now need documents, not assurances.
Two updates, one direction
Industry reporting states that the IEC formally issued IEC 63349-2:2026 for oil-free rotary compressors on 18 June 2026, setting a new compliance baseline for energy-efficiency assessment that reaches beyond manufacturers into procurement, certification and market-access workflows.
On 14 July 2026 Germany put the revised VDI 2083 Blatt 4:2026 into effect, raising the compliance threshold for oil-free compressed air systems serving semiconductor and pharmaceutical cleanrooms — and explicitly involving project bidders, procurement teams, integrators and service providers.
What efficiency proof means mechanically
Efficiency figures are measured on a machine in known condition. A clogged air filter, a saturated separator, a slipping coupling or a cooler packed with dust all move specific power in the wrong direction, and none of them are visible in a datasheet.
That is why an efficiency-driven standard is, in practice, a maintenance standard. The cheapest kilowatt saved on a compressor installation is almost always the one recovered by restoring the machine to its designed pressure drop and cooling performance.
- Measure pressure drop across filters and separator instead of guessing service intervals.
- Clean coolers and check fan drives — heat rejection failures raise energy use before they trip alarms.
- Fix leaks and check unloading behaviour; idle time at load pressure is pure waste.
Where we fit in
Our service visits document the mechanical state that any efficiency or air-quality claim depends on: filtration renewed, separator condition, cooler cleaned, coupling and drive alignment checked, sensors verified. We work on Atlas Copco and Almig units and on the Caterpillar, Cummins, Deutz, Scania, John Deere, Kubota and Perkins engines that drive the mobile machines.
Summary — our conclusions
The article above is our own rewrite of the cited publications. Here is the short version.
- IEC 63349-2:2026 and VDI 2083 turn efficiency and air purity into documented obligations.
- An efficiency standard is, in practice, a maintenance standard: pressure drop and cooling decide the numbers.
- Service providers are explicitly named in the compliance chain — documentation becomes part of the job.
